Neat Women don't necessarily believe that brand new is always better (we know with certainty that some things improve with the passage of time!) In that spirit we offer the following possibilities--
The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel, by Barbara Kingsolver A story told by the wife and four daughters of a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. A suspenseful epic of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa. Published 1999 Paperback Amazon $10.50
ISBN: 0060930535
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, by Rebecca Wells (HarperTrade, 1997) When Vivi and Siddalee Walker, an unforgettable mother-daughter team, get into a savage fight over a New York Times article that refers to Vivi as a 'tap-dancing child abuser,' the Ya-Yas, sashay in and conspire to bring everyone back together. In 1932, Vivi and the Ya-Yas were disqualified from a Shirley Temple Look-Alike Contest for unladylike behavior. Sixty years later, they're 'bucking 70' and still making waves. Neat Women Inc: these are "waves" we think you'll want to "catch." This is the book that introduced us to the beauty of the Lachrymatory. Published 1997 Paperback Amazon $11.20
ISBN: 0060928336
Talk Before Sleep, by Elizabeth Berg….Conventional and quiet, Ann Stanley never had a true best friend until she met the beautiful and outgoing Ruth Thomas. Over the years, their friendship deepens and enriches them both. When Ruth is diagnosed with rapidly metastasizing breast cancer, a small group of women, along with Ann, share Ruth's doctor visits, help make funeral plans, and enjoy late-night lobster feasts together. They talk about men, children, sex, the future, and the past. They weep, laugh, analyze, and try to console one another. Neat Women Inc: one of the most difficult topics in life to deal with is portrayed in such a truly poignant fashion that this book made us both laugh out loud and weep quietly. Published 1997 Paperback Amazon $11.16
ISBN: 0385318782
She Flew the COOP, by Michael Lee West…Ms. West paints an intriguing tragicomedy set in the South that will tug at your emotions. Very detailed in its descriptions and character development. Neat Women Inc: if you enjoyed "She's Come Undone," or like a story with a blend of humor and mystery, equally dispensed by a talented author, you'll love this! Published 1995 Paperback Amazon $11.20
ISBN: 0060926201
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, by J.K. Rowling Neat Women Inc: Wondered what all the fuss is about? Find out for yourself in this first in a series of seven novels about a boy who discovers he has magical powers. For the child in all of us, Ms. Rowling tells a story which will seize your imagination and allow you to speak knowledgeably about a literary wonder which has captured the top spot on The New York Times best seller list for almost a year. Obviously, it's a very quick read for "grown ups." Published 1998 Amazon $13.97
ISBN: 0590353403
The Pilot's Wife, by Anita Shreve
Neat Women Inc: this novel held a special Interest for EVE, whom we've previously
mentioned was a flight attendant for five years with a major U.S. carrier. Also, one of her best friends since grade school married a pilot. The story holds many twists and turns which can make this a "page turner" for readers. Would you enjoy it as much if you've never had any ties whatsoever to an airline, other than personal travels? We think so. Published 1999 Amazon $13.95 ISBN: 0316601950
Ladder of Years by Anne Tyler." Published in 1995 and now available in paperback, this book is about a woman who, for reasons she can't actually articulate, decides she needs to "get away." She simply walks out the door, leaving behind husband, children, parents and friends without so much as a farewell and disappears. Her new life is unfettered by any of the attachments of the old life, yet over the course of time she realizes that none of us can truly escape ourselves. Paperback Amazon $7.99 ISBN: 0804113475
Books by Anne Rivers Siddons: A prolific writer who has published a new book annually for more than ten years, Ms. Siddons writes about unique relationships and friendships which are often defined by the settings she creates. Our three favorites are, "Outer Banks" (Audiocassette $9.99 ISBN: 0060556668) because it spotlights the friendship of some especially interesting women (and each of us can find ourselves in at least one of them); "Colony" (Published 1993 Paperback Amazon $7.99 ISBN: 0061099708) because it reminds us of the unique dynamics of families, even the affluent who, despite the old adage "the rich are not like the rest of us" are still not totally unlike people we know; "John Chancellor Makes Me Cry" which is actually nonfiction and just a nice reminder that crying can sometimes be a very comforting act. Published 1994 Paperback Amazon $6.50 ISBN: 0061092894
Books by Olivia Goldsmith: Another '90's success story, Ms. Goldsmith captivated women with her premier novel, The First Wives Club (Published 1996 Paperback Amazon $7.99 ISBN: 0671002481). We were especially delighted by her ultimate good fortune when we learned that the first half dozen male publishers she approached not only turned her down but told her the whole story line was too far fetched and "over the top." Not exactly! Her next three are not as laugh out loud funny. Flavor of the Month (Published 1994 Paperback Amazon $7.99 ISBN: 0671794507) is in fact, a rather dark comedy, but if you've ever wished you could have a behind the scenes look at the entertainment industry (Hollywood in particular), the fashion industry, and the publishing industry, then Flavor of the Month, Fashionably Late (Published 1994 Paperback Amazon $7.99 ISBN: 0061093890) and The Best Seller (Re-Published 1996 Paperback Amazon $7.99 ISBN: 0061096083) are good choices. Sadly, Ms. Goldsmith passed away in 1994 after being anesthetized for cosmetic surgery.
